Vibhu and I spent the weekend camping, surfing, and exploring the tiny town of Tofino on Vancouver Island’s central coast. The town itself is reminiscent of Santa Cruz in the 1940′s, just a sleepy village of 1,500 surfers, organic food, and deserted beaches.

Driving along Highway 4, hugging the shores of lakes, rivers, and mountain cliffs between Nanaimo and the western coastal communities, we pulled off at Cathedral Grove to see Canada’s oldest and most gigantic trees. Vibhu was in awe of the sheer size of these 800 year old beasts, some so tall that we couldn’t see their tops, and many so wide that it would take 5 adults to loop around their trunks.

On Sunday, Vibhu and I suited up (full winter wetsuits, complete with booties and gloves!) and embarked on a surfing adventure that won’t be the last. It was a day of firsts for Vibhu–his first swim in the Pacific Ocean, his first time donning a wetsuit, and first go at surfing. He did awesome, and by the end of our three hours in the water, he even managed a few good solid rides! He’s now so stoked about surfing, he’s planning trips up to Tofino all summer! Pretty impressive for a guy that is scared of water.

I haven’t been on a board in years and I forgot how wildly addicting the ocean is! My belly is getting a little too big for any more surfing, so I’ll just have to wait until next summer to perfect my pop-up.
